Sometimes family law can present some pretty tough scenarios and traditional methods of legal representation won’t always be the best solutions. Child emancipation is one of those cases. When most people think of complex custody battles, they often picture it as the complications of a difficult divorce or separation. However, that isn’t always the case. Every custody battle is not held between two parents on opposite ends of the table. Sometimes in very rare cases the children themselves may be seated on the opposite end of the table to determine their own custody structure.

Celebrity Child Emancipation

One widely known case of this sort was Drew Barrymore vs. her biological mother, Jaid. Barrymore was a wildly popular child star after her role in E.T. As she approached her early teenage years, she was seen quite often engaging in drug and alcohol related activities with her mother at popular nightclubs. At the age of fifteen she applied for legal emancipation from her mother and won. With her newfound freedom she was able to eventually place her life back on track and move in a more positive direction.

Childhood emancipation cases are not common but in some ways very necessary to help children in unhealthy and abusive custody structures gain freedom and a fresh start.
